EDR – Diffusing Essential Oils

Your sense of smell is one of your most powerful senses. More than anything else, a smell can
instantly recreate a memory, a moment in time; you can be transported to another place and time,
just by smelling something familiar. Now, imagine if that powerful sense could also take a major part
enhancing your health and well being. The simple and natural act of breathing in and out can positively
affect your health, your peace of mind, and lift your spirits. That is what diffusing Essential Oils is all
about.

Diffused oils alter the structure of molecules that create odors, rather than just masking them. They
also increase the level of available oxygen, produce negative ions, and release natural ozone. Many

essential oils, usually the citrus oils such as lemongrass, orange, grapefruit, lemon, as well as eucalyptus,
tea tree, lavender, frankincense are extremely effective for eliminating and destroying airborne germs
and bacteria. Oil blends, including purification and thieves, are also helpful in creating healthy air in your
home or office.

A cold-air diffuser is designed to release a micro-fine mist of essential oils into the air, where they can
remain suspended for several hours. A diffuser disperses the oils without heating or burning, unlike
candles or aroma lamps which can render the oil less therapeutically beneficial and can even create
toxic compounds. Burned oils may be come carcinogenic so a cold-air diffuser is going to create the
best results without the negative side effects. By diffusing certain oils, you may reduce bacteria, fungus,
mold and unpleasant odors in an area. They can also relax the body, relieve tension and clear the mind.
Certain Essential Oils, when diffused, have also been shown to help with weight management, improve
concentration, alertness and mental clarity, as well as stimulate neurotransmitters, the secretion of
endorphins, and growth hormones. The power of smell is enhanced just by adding an oil to the mix.

In order to get the best results from diffusing, start by diffusing oils for 15-30 minutes a day. Similar
to topical application, you want to give your body an opportunity to acclimate and adjust to the new
presence of oils. As you become more accustomed to the oils and begin recognizing their effects,
you can increase the diffusing time to 1-2 hours each day as needed. Be sure you place the diffuser
high in the room so that the oil mist falls through the air and removes odor-causing substances. For
some respiratory conditions, you may want to diffuse throughout the entire night. If you don’t have a
diffuser, you can also combine oils with water in a spray bottle. One recipe for fresher air is 20 drops of
lavender, 10 drops lemon, 6 drops bergamot, 5 drops lime and 5 drops grapefruit. Combine with 1 cup
of distilled water and remember to shake well before using. For more secrets on using diffused oils to
improve your air quality, and to learn how the air around you can improve your health, contact Your Life

EDR – Topical Applications

Essential Oils can be used as powerful health care and healing products for a multitude of ailments.
Whether you’re using Essential Oils to help with simple cold symptoms or to enhance and lighten your
mood, there are many delivery mechanisms that you can employ, the most common being the topical
applications. Certainly if you have ever used an Essential Oil, you are aware that you can apply the oil
directly to your skin (remember to do a skin test on a small areas BEFORE you apply the oil to your entire
body). But did you realize that there are several others ways that you can topically apply the oils to

generate the best results?

First, remember to start at your feet when you’re trying a new oil. This gives the body an opportunity
to become acclimated to the new oil and its effects, minimizing the chance of a negative reaction or skin
irritation. (For a complete Vita Flex foot map to correctly identify the best areas of application, contact
Your Life Wisdom at 800.366.6308 or visit us online at www.ylwisdom.com and look for the Essential
Oil Desk Reference. You may even want to look into getting the pocket version for a more mobile usage
reference. ) Start by applying 3-6 drops of a single of blended oil and spread it over the bottom of each
foot. When using the oils on yourself, you can use 1-2 drops of oil on 2-3 locations twice a day. You can
increase to four times a day as needed. Be sure to allow time for the oil to be completely absorbed (2-3
minutes) before applying another oil and to avoid getting the oil on any clothing.

In addition to the traditional method of direct application, you can also use the Essential Oils in
combination with a massage. If you are working a large area, such as the back, you can mix 1-3 drops
of the selected essential oil into 1 tsp of pure vegetable oil or a massage oil. Keep in mind that some
massage oils such as olive, almond, jojoba and wheat germ oil may stain some fabrics so allow the oils
to be completely absorbed before getting dressed. Other applications that lend themselves readily to
Essentials Oils are acupuncture and acupressure. Licensed acupuncturists can dramatically increase the
effectiveness of acupuncture by using oils. Place a few drops of the desired oil in the palm of your hand
and then dip the tip of your needle into the oil before inserting it. You can pre-mix several oils in your
hand if you wish.

Other methods of topical applications include warm packs, cold packs, layering and compresses. These
methods can intensify the effects of any oil that you apply directly to the skin. By covering the area with
a cold or warm back, it gives the oils an added opportunity to work more quickly and on a deeper level.
Keep in mind that when dealing with neurological problems or treating any sort of swelling or inflamed
tissues to always use a cold compress, not a warm one. To learn the details of these applications,
as well as how you can utilize Essential Oils in your shower or bath, contact Your Life Wisdom at

EDR – Safe Usage Techniques

Picture this: you have been visiting friends and experience a hot water burn while cooking dinner.
They are familiar with the healthy benefits of Essential Oils and have some lavender on hand. In

a quick reaction to the situation, they rub the oil over your entire arm to try to alleviate the burn.
Within seconds, the burn has intensified on your arm and the redness has somehow increased! What
happened? What is causing this and more importantly, how do fix it?

As you learn more about how Essential Oils can benefit the health and wellness of your entire family,
keep in mind that like any other health care product, there are certain guidelines that can help you
prevent negative reactions and promote the healthiest results possible. For example, in the story above,
what do you do to correct the negative effects of what might be a diluted form of lavendin? Or maybe,
it is a pure bottle of Young Living Essential Oil Lavender but it is reacting negatively to a lotion you had
previously applied to your arm. In this particular case, your best bet is to dilute the lavender with some
pure vegetable oil and try to relieve the burn.

Although you may find yourself in a situation that requires a quick fix, if you are starting to use Essential
Oils, there are ways you can eliminate or reduce the negative reactions you may otherwise experience.
First, dilute your oils when you’re first using them. Try a mix of 1-3 drops of Essential Oil with ½
teaspoon of massage oil, or a pure vegetable oil. More dilution may be needed but this is will create a
good base mix. Also, reduce the number of oils used at one time; use one single oil or one oil blend at
a time. You can work up to layering oils but when first starting application. You can try using less oil
per application or apply the oil less frequently to allow your body the chance to get used to the new
healing oils. You will want to increase your intake of purified or distilled water as well. If you choose to
try a full detoxification process, you may wish to talk to your health care professional and monitor your
progress. Always remember the importance of a skin test; start small and work your way up to larger
areas of skin.

There are many health care products and every day use products that can cause negative reactions to
the Essential Oils when you first use them. These products range from cosmetics and deodorants to
garden sprays and detergents and other cleansers. For a full list of the interactive chemicals and how to
avoid them, contact Your Life Wisdom today at 800.366.6308 or visit us online at www.ylwisdom.com.

reactions for you and your family.

EDR – Before You start Using Essential Oils

When was the last time you tried a new diet strategy or exercise routine without talking to your primary
physician first? When was the last time you carelessly ripped the tags off of your pillow or your curling
iron without thinking twice about the warning not to? Are you the kind of person that likes to live
a little on the edge – maybe you like just a little bit of uncertainty in your life. Or maybe you live on
the other end of the spectrum; you always take time to painstakingly weight the options and the
consequences before making decisions, no matter how large or small. Whether you’re a dare devil or
incredibly cautious, there are certain precautions you need to be aware of before starting to work with
Essential Oils to protect you and your family.

While all of these oils do come from nature, during the process of taking the healing oils out of several
plants to create one powerful liquid, these oils become even more potent when in a pure and undiluted
form. Always perform a skin test before using a new Essential Oil. Every person is different and may
react to the oil in a slightly different manner. Start by applying the Essential Oil to a small area of skin.
Also, only apply one single oil or one oil blend at a time. When layering oils that are new to you, allow
3-5 minutes for your body to respond before applying a second oil. This will allow you to watch the
reaction to each new oil and determine how it will affect you.

Remember that Essential Oils can interact with chemicals found in cosmetics, personal care products,
soap and cleansers. Some of these products – especially petroleum-based chemicals can penetrate the
skin and remain in the skin and fatty tissues for days or even weeks after use. If there is a reaction, it
can cause skin irritation, nausea, headaches or other less than pleasant effects. By trying just a small
area of skin first, you can judge how your body will respond to the oil and determine how you should
proceed. Essential Oils can also react with toxins built up in the body from chemicals in food, water and
your work environment. If you experience a reaction to an Essential Oil, it may be wise to discontinue
use and start an internal cleansing program before resuming regular use of the oils. You can also double
your water intake while using Essential Oils to help this process.

Remember that, similar to other health care oils and lotions, the Essential Oils may cause stinging
when used close to or in your eyes. You should always practice smart application techniques when
using Essential Oils to prevent negative reactions and promote great results. For more information
concerning safe use and to learn other healthy tips, contact Your Life Wisdom at 800.366.6308 or visit

Healing Oils of the Bible

Whether you are just learning how Essential Oils can help you create and maintain balance in your health, or they have been a part of your health regimen for you and your family for years, you may be interested to know that Essential Oils go back further than you may realize.  Professors across the world doing research on Essential Oils have discovered that they have actually been around for centuries and were actually being used during Biblical times.  In the book “Healing Oils of the Bible”, you are able to look inside the history of Essential Oils, both from a scientific and a scriptural viewpoint, and see exactly how powerful the oils are and how people have been benefiting from them for much longer than you have.

One thing to realize about Essential Oils is that it is not in us to create these healing substances – God did that for you already.  It is for you to tune into the process, the thought and care that has already gone into creating these natural oils to restore and maintain your health.  We have been given these amazing plants from which these Essential Oils are derived, and we have been given the intelligence to use them properly to our best benefit.

The healing oils that were used during Biblical times were all Aromatics and are considered “essential oils” because they contain the life blood of the plans from which they came and they contain the life force and vibrational energy that gives them the healing power that works for people.  Still today these fragrant oils are treasured and are a daily part of the lives of the people living in the Holy Land.  This area was the crossroads of trade for spices, oils and aromatic herbs from throughout the known world of that day.  From Genesis to Ezekiel and on to Proverbs, the Bible very clearly makes use of Essential Oils form precious gifts to health remedies to sacred oaths.

One of the most famous stories using Essentials Oils is that of the thieves during the Dark Ages in Europe.  The Black Plague was rampant during that time; the bodies of those who died were so contagious, often time people were afraid to get close enough to move the bodies to perform a proper burial.  There was, however, a small band of men who went from house to house stripping the bodies and homes of all jewelry and everything of value – and somehow, this group of thieves did not get sick and were not consumed by the plague.  King James, who commissioned the English translation of the Bible in 1611, discovered that these were spice traders and were utilizing the protective properties of oils (including clove, cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus and rosemary) which they used as a blend to protect themselves against the plague; hence, the powerful blend known as “Thieves”.

Discover for yourself how powerful these Essential Oils have been throughout the stories in the Bible and have withstood tests over the generations and still are shown to have the same healing properties today that they did then.  For your own copy of “The Healing Oils of the Bible” contact Your Life Wisdom at 800.336.6308 or visit www.ylwisdom.com.

EDR – Therapeutic-Grade vs. Diluted Essential Oils

As you get more in tune with what your body needs to maintain a healthy balance, and as you move further away from unnatural toxins and other negative facets of your life, you may find that there are more products on the market today that may not be able to deliver the promises they make.  You may have tried an essential oil based product before and not achieved the results you had hoped for and so you’re a little wary of trying them again.  What you may not realize is that with all the different products available, it’s very easy to find ones that are not therapeutic grade, meaning that they aren’t going to work as well or as quickly. You may find that they have been diluted from the purest form or that they are blended with other filler oils so, while they are technically a natural oil, they are not the therapeutic-grade, pure and potent Essential Oils that you will find with Young Living Essential Oils.

One of the factors that determines the purity of an oil is its chemical components, and these components can be affected by a vast number of variables including (but not limited to): the part of the plant from which the oil was produced, soil conditions, the fertilizer used to grow the plant, the geographical region including climate and altitude, the harvesting methods…and the list goes on.  For example, common thyme produces several different chemotypes depending on the condition of its growth, climate and altitude.  One chemotype of thyme will yield an essential oil with high levels of thymol depending on what time of year it is distilled.  The later it is distilled in the growing season, the more thymol the oil will contain.  Proper cultivation assures that more specific chemotypes like Thyme (thymus vulgaris) will maintain a good strain of thymol, whereas unscheduled harvesting may produce linalool and eugenol thyme, all on the same mountainside.

The key to producing therapeutic-grade essential oils is to preserve as many of the delicate aromatic compounds within the essential oil as possible.  Fragile aromatic chemicals are easily destroyed by high temperature and pressure.   The plant material should also be free of herbicides and other agrichemicals.  These can cause a reaction within the oil during distillation to produce toxic compounds.  And because so many herbicides are oil-soluble, they can easily mix into an essential oil without your knowledge.

As you increase your knowledge and understanding of how Essential Oils, you will grow to appreciate how important it is to work only with therapeutic-grade oils.  For more information on how to select the right Essential Oil for you and your family, contact Your Life Wisdom at 800.336.6308 and ask for your copy of the Essential Oil Desk Reference or visit www.ylwisdom.com.

EDR – Biblical and Ancient References to Essential Oils

If you are fairly new to the world of natural health practices and are just learning about how wonderfully powerful the Essential Oils can be when applied properly, you may also be under the impression that this is a fairly new practice, one that has just recently been discovered and cultivated to be readily accessible to the masses.  As you learn more about how each oil can benefit you and those you love, you may be interested to know that this nothing new but rather Essential Oils have been referred to and used for years….centuries… actually, back to Biblical times.

There are more than 200 references to aromatics, incense and ointments throughout the Old and New testaments of the Bible.  Aromatics such as frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, cinnamon, rosemary were all used for anointing and healing the sick.  In Exodus, the Lord gave the following recipe to Moses for a holy anointing oil:

Myrrh – “five hundred shekels” (about 1 gallon)

Cinnamon – “two hundred fifty shekels”

Calamus – “two hundred and fifty shekels”

Cassia  –  “five hundred shekels”

Olive Oil  – “an hin” (about 1/13 gallons)

Psalms 133:2 speaks of the sweetness of breathren dwelling together in unity:  “It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down the beard, even Aaron’s beard; that went down to the skirts of his garments.”

It is significant to note that according to the biblical and Talmudic recipes for incense, three varieties of cinnamon were involved.  Cinnamon is known to be highly antimicrobial, anti-infectious, and anti-bacterial.  The incense ingredient listed as “stacte” is believed to be a sweet, myrrh-related spice, which would make it anti-infectious and antiviral as well.

The New Testament records that wise men presented the Christ child with frankincense and myrrh.  There is another precious aromatic, spikenard, described in the anointing of Jesus:

“And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a women having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.”  – Mark 14:3

Where you are looking to sanitize your household during cold and flu season or you’re to release some of the excess weight you picked up over the last few years, or maybe you just need a little pick me up as you go throughout your day, take comfort in knowing that people just like you have been using the natural power of Essential Oils to accomplish those goals, and more, for generations.  You are in good company.  For more information on the historical background of Essential Oils, or to pick up a copy of the Essential Oil Desk Reference, contact YL Wisdom at 800.336.6308 or visit www.ylwisdom.com.

EDR – What is an Essential Oil?

If you have ever stepped foot inside a health food store, ever had a massage in a salon, or even visited a medical/health professional office, chances are you have been exposed to some sort of an Essential Oil.  Most likely you have smelled them or seen them in a diffuser sitting on a corner table.  You may have had Essential Oils used in your various massages to increase relaxation, to promote calm and wellness. With more research and more ready access to high-quality Essential Oils, people are taking advantage of the natural power of these oils to make their clients and staff feel more comfortable, feel more energetic, and create a general sense of well being throughout the building.

So, what is an Essential Oil?

Essential Oils are aromatic volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds.  They are all the powerful liquids held within the natural plants around us, removed and purified, and then packaged to be readily available to those who know how to use them.   Part of the power of Essential Oils is in their complex chemistry – each one may consist of hundreds of different chemical compounds.  Additionally, they are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried or even fresh herbs.  The distillation process is what makes the oils so concentrated; it often requires a whole plant or even many plants to produce a single drop of distilled essential oils.  You are, in essence, getting the power of a whole plant in one tiny little concentrated drop.

Essential Oils, although oils by nature, are much different from vegetable oils including corn, peanut and olive oils.  Vegetable oils can become greasy and clog pores.  They can also become oxidized and rancid over time and do not offer any antibacterial properties.  Pressed oils and essential oils high in plant waxes (i.e. patchouli), can go rancid after a time, especially if exposed to heat for extended periods of time.  Most Essential Oils, on the other hand, cannot go rancid and act as powerful antimicrobials.

While there is not much opportunity for formal education concerning Essential Oils and how to best use them, available in the United States (the Middle East, the Orient, and Europe have a much longer history of using natural products and botanical extracts and it is there that you may obtain adequate instruction on the chemistry and therapy of essential oils), you do have ready access to resources designed specifically to walk you through the world of Essential Oils.  For more information about the Essential Oil Desk Reference (EODR) and about how Essential Oils can positively affect your health and wellness, call YL Wisdom at 800.336.6308 or visit www.ylwisdom.com.

Inner Transformations Using Essential Oils

What is going on in the world today?  Type II diabetes is on the rise, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, allergies, and other nutrition-related diseases are becoming more common, and childhood obesity is rampant.  Cancer in all its varieties affects people across the country; more and more people are taking more prescription drugs for a wide range of ailments.  There are more miracle cures and surgeries to take care of these illnesses than ever before.  What’s going on?

We live our lives in a hurry which means more stress and less time taken to eat a decent nutritious meal.  In addition to the fast food wave, even cookbooks have shifted from creating things from scratch to being more inclined to ask for a bottle of this and a can of that to create something “homemade”.   Even our vitamins are being tampered with;  companies find the active ingredient, find a way to make it synthetically to make more of a profit, and we end up with the short end with vitamins that aren’t as good for us as they used to be.

So what does our body do with these toxins that we are ingesting from various sources?  Because it cannot recognize them as natural, often times our bodies just don’t know what to do with them.  The body can’t metabolize them in the liver, only simple substances can be handled by the kidney; so, the rest are stored in our tissues, our skin, our fat, etc.  We are seeing the causes of many diseases stem from toxins stored in and around our vital organs.

To cleanse…you’ve probably heard the word before.  No doubt you’ve seen advertisements for cleansing diets or a friend or family member has told you about a miracle juice that is supposed to rid your body of toxins forever.  Maybe you have even tried to perform a cleanse but purchased low-quality materials and ended up with no results and feeling like you had been lied to. Do you understand it?  Do you know what the process of cleansing entails and why it’s important for your body to function properly?

It is critical to use the correct, high-quality ingredients when working with the body and expecting stellar results.  For example, ginseng is a general body tonic, walnuts support the brain, and nutmeg oil has been shown to support the adrenals.  This is where Essential Oils come in – referred to as the “gold of the gods.”  They have been found to be more powerful and effective than dried or fresh herbs – the oil is more concentrated in that form than when found in small quantities in each plant.

Oregano works wonders for a child’s cough; for your liver, use Juva Tone, Release and Forgiveness; Release, Marjoram, Aroma Siez and Relieve It are great for sore and stiff muscles.  For your thyroid, a combination of endoflex, myrtle, lemongrass and thryomin are effective.  To learn more about how to cleanse, when to cleanse each area of the body, and what Essential Oils should be used for each process, check out “Inner Tranformations Using Essential Oils”, available through www.ylwisdom.com or call us at 800.336.6308.
