Why Use Essential Oils?

Have you ever wondered where essential oils come from? They come from plants, either from the leaf, bark, stem, flower, or root. They are carefully distilled to remove proteins that can cause allergies or negative side effects. Therapeutic-grade essential oils are safe.

In 2 minutes they are absorbed into the body and in 2 hours they are metabolized like food. Whatever the body is in need of, that will go right to the cell to repair damage and whatever is not needed is excreted naturally. As we use essential oils frequently, we will support our immune system and maintain optimum health. They are several ways you can use essential oils in your everyday life.

You can apply the oil directly to your body. If it is your first time using oils, you may want to dilute with an organic fatty oil to prevent a skin reaction. You can apply directly to the neck, temples, feet, or spine. Another great way to use essential oils is to diffuse each day to help keep the air clean and fresh. Essential oils may also be consumed by putting one drop into a capsule, on a piece of bread, or in a beverage.

You may be one of those people who use essential oils on a regular basis. If you are, you probably have your favorite oils that you use on a regular basis. Have you realized how many ways essential oils can help improve your life? Consider some of the following random tips from essential oil blends and maybe you’ll find a new favorite oil among them!

Di-Gize is an oil blend that will help relieve digestive problems. Symptoms such as indigestion, heartburn, gas, and bloating can be relieved by applying this essential oil blend to your stomach, or feet and ankles.

Dragon Time is another oil blend that promises relief to women! This blend will relieve PMS symptoms, cramping, mood swings, and headaches caused by hormonal imbalance. Try applying with a hot compress directly over your lower abdomen, or across your lower back. Another great way to use this blend is by adding 2 -4 drops to bath water.

Relieve It is a blend that will bring relief to those sore muscles! This oil blend is high in anti- inflammatory compounds which help to relieve deep tissue pain. This blend has been traditionally used to treat arthritis. Whatever your aches and pains may be, Relieve It is a great way to help alleviate some of your daily pain.

It is amazing to read about all of the many ways essential oils can improve our lives. EDR – Lymphatic Pump

Do you frequently experience cold fingers and toes, even when the rest of your body is warm? If you
are sitting on the couch, enjoying great conversation with your family, and yet despite the blanket you
have over you, your feet still get cold? You may be experiencing low blood circulation which can often
leave your extremities cold, even when your core is a good temperature. This is not unusual – people
everywhere complain of the same symptoms. Cold extremities are just one symptom of low circulation
which can lead to lowered immune system, which can lead to further illness.
Whether this happens to you or someone else, there are ways to increase circulation without even
leaving your home. If you have a family or friend who has just had surgery and is required to stay in bed
for a great period of time, or perhaps someone you know is permanently relegated to their bed, you
may be looking to find ways to keep the blood flowing , the joints working properly, and the immune
system working properly. One of the easiest methods to learn and perform is the Lymphatic Pump.
Maintaining lymph circulation is one of the keys to keeping the immune system adequately functioning.
This technique is designed to promote lymph circulation and it is an excellent tool for those who are
sedentary or bedridden.
First, begin with the recipient lying on their back, and hold one leg with one hand just above the ankles
with your palm on the underside of the leg (covering the Achille’s tendon). Place your other hand on the
bottom of the recipients foot with your palm over the ball of their feet and your fingers curled around
their toes. Gently, push the top of the recipient’s foot away from you. Although you want to stretch the
muscles a little bit, and get a good strong pump, be aware that you may need to start slowly and work
within the comfort level of the recipient. Then, pull the recipient’s foot toward you by the toes until
the ball of the foot is as close to the table/bed as possible. This completes one “pump” – before you
continue, check with the recipient to verify that the muscles in their feet are not being overextended.
This should be an active process but you don’t want to cause pain or injury.
To properly administer this method and create maximum results, repeat this “pump” at least ten
times on each leg. You may notice that their entire body moves with this and that is normal. For more
information, and for diagrams on how to perform the Lymphatic Pump properly, contact Your Life
Wisdom at 800.366.6308 or visit www.ylwisdom.com and ask for your copy of the Essential Oil Desk
Reference (or the EDR). It is also available in pocket size so you can take your information with you

EDR – Raindrop Technique

The next time you are feeling tense or tired, try this exercise. Close your eyes and inhale slowly, then
exhale slowly. Do you feel better? Perhaps you need to do more than just breathe if you want to
support your immune system and restore calm to your surroundings. Try it again, only this time,
imagine that someone is giving you a massage using “feathering” as a part of the Raindrop Technique.
They have applied a mixture of potent therapeutic grade oils including oregano, basil, wintergreen,
peppermint, thyme, cypress and marjoram, as well as two oil blends (Energy Balance Blend and Muscle
Relaxing Blend). Visualize the tension lines flowing out of your body; feel yourself breathing more easily.
The combination of oils and massage technique that are part of the Raindrop Technique has been
thoroughly researched and has been shown to lighten your spirits and allow you to enjoy a new level of
health.
D. Gary Young developed the Raindrop Technique (RT) based on his research with essential oils as
antimicrobial agents, his knowledge of the Vitaflex technique and its reflex points in the feet, and
information on effleurage – (the feather-lite finger stroking) and its effect on the muscles and the
nervous system. After visiting with the Lakota people, Young learned that for several generations past,
the Lakota Indians had migrated across the Canadian border into the northern regions of Saskatchewan
and Manitoba to witness the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. Those who were ill or had complicated
health problems would stand facing the Aurora Borelis, hold their hands toward the lights, and inhale
deeply. They believed that this would bring the healing energy in the lights into their bodies, passing
through the spine and other afflicted areas of the body through neurological pathways. Many of them
experienced dramatic healing effects.
Eventually, the Lakota Indians no longer crossed the border for this sacred healing trip, and began
instead to use effleurage which became associated with this healing technique. When combined with
the energy created by essential oils and Vita Flex, its effects are greatly heightened. The Raindrop
Technique has received an enormous amount of praise from users all over the world since is formal
adoption in 1989. A 2001 study by David Stuart showed the responses from approximately 14,000
Raindrop sessions. Overall, 98% rated their experience as pleasant, 97% rated is as positive, 89%
resulted in improved health and 86% resulted in an improved emotional state. Moreover, 99.9% of the
recipients of Raindrop Technique said that they would choose to receive RT again.

technique, contact Your Life Wisdom at 800.366.6308 or visit www.ylwisdom.com for your copy of the

EDR – Vita Flex Technique

Thousands of years ago in Tibet, a specialized form of hand and foot massage was created. This new
technique was shown to be exceptionally effective in delivering the benefits of essential oils throughout
the body. They called it Vita Flex Technique which means “vitality trough the reflexes.” This technique
was passed through generations and was finally perfected in the 1960’s by Stanley Burroughs long
before acupuncture was popular in Western Medicine. This massage technique is based on the idea
that every part of your body is connected to each other and every area of your body is connected to
and can be represented by a specific area on your foot and/or spinal column. By using certain essential
oils and rubbing them into certain reflex areas, you can affect specific portions of your body in a very
powerful way.
Vita Flex Technique is based on a complete network of reflex points that stimulate all the internal body
systems. Essential oils are applied to these contact points, and energy is released though electrical
impulses created by contact between the fingertips and reflex points. Breaks or clogs in your nerve
pathways are usually caused by toxins, damaged tissues or loss of oxygen. The electrical current created
by massaging the contact points, follows nerve pathways to these clogs or breaks and begins repair work
directly at the source. As with acupressure, there are hundreds of Vita Flex reflex points throughout the
human body that are capable of releasing many kinds of tension, congestion, and imbalances. These
points include the entire realm of body and mind.
As with many massage techniques, the key is in the implementation. For example, Vita Flex uses a
rolling and releasing motion that involves placing fingers flat on the skin, rolling onto the fingertips, and
continuing over onto the fingernail using medium pressure. This roll and release process is repeated
until the Vita Flex point, or the entire area, is covered. This movement is repeated over the entire
area three times. If you wish to intensify the results, or see bigger results more quickly, combine this
massage technique with the application of Essential Oils. Apply 1-3 drops of the essential oil that
corresponds with the area you are working on and this combination will actually increase the effect of
both the massage and the oil when used alone.
For example, if you are experiencing sinus headaches or pain in your ears and eyes, you may wish
to apply this technique to the bottom of each of your smallest four toes, as well as the ball of your
foot where your toes connect to the rest of your foot. Specifically, the first two toes on both foots
are connected to your eyes, the third toe to your sinuses and your smallest toe to your ears. TO

pancreas and more, contact Your Life Wisdom at 1.800.336.6308 and ask for your copy of the Essential

EDR – Surface Cleansers and Deodorizers

There are few things better than spending several hours scrubbing and cleaning your home, and then
have that cleanliness be very obvious because of that great chemical aroma left behind by so many
house hold cleansers. It’s not clean unless it smells like bleach and chemicals, right? Wrong. After you
have spent so
much time cleaning, what you really want is the chance to sit back, put your feet up, and
smell fresh, l
ight, clean air without a trace of harmful and obnoxious fumes. IF you have never used
Essential Oils in your cleaning process, you are in for a great surprise.
You can deep clean your home without the stench, hassle, and expense of commercial products. Instead
of purchasin
g standard household cleansers for surfaces, you can actually create your own natural,
safe version by filling a plastic spray bottle with water and a squirt of dishwashing soap. Then add 3-
5 drops of lavender, lemon and pine essential oils. Shake the spray bottle well, mixing thoroughly, and
then your homemade cleaner is r
eady to go to work. This simple mixture is extremely economical,
yet is cleans and disinfects
as well as any commercial cleaner. Essential Oils that contain antibacterial
and antiviral properties are excellent for cleaning, including cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, thyme,
lemongrass, grapefruit and more ( for a complete list, visit www.ylwisdom.com and pick up your copy of
the Essential Oil Desk Reference).
Essential Oils also act as great deodorizers for your kitchen, bathrooms, etc., which are often the source
of odors and bacteria. Use the following mixtures to freshen, deodorize, and disinfect the air, work
areas, cupboards, fixtures, carpets, woodwork, etc. in those rooms. These blends are safe for the
environment and for your family. Keep in mind that essential oils will separate easily from the water
mixture so always shake well, and often, as you use these mixtures. They will actually remove the odors
and clean the air, as opposed to just covering the odors with a more powerful smell.
Mixture #1 – 2 drops rosemary CT cineol, 4 drops lemon, 3 drops eucalyptus globules, 4 drops
lavender, 1 cup water. Shake mixture well and put in spray bottle, ready for use.
Mixture #2 – 3-4 drops lavender, 5-6 drops purification, and 1 cup water. Mix and shake well.

EDR – Other Uses

You have most likely heard much about Essential Oils and you are, by now, fully aware of how much
they can enhance your wellbeing, and help support your physical, emotional and mental health. You
and your family have certainly experienced the great benefits that come from using Essential Oils
including applying the oils directly to your skin, using them in cold and warm compresses, and even
putting them into your air via a diffuser. But did you realize how many other practical applications these
oils have?
For example, you can directly inhale certain oils, as opposed to applying them to your skin or diffusing
them in the air. Simply place 2 or more drops into the palm of your left hand and rub clockwise with
the flat palm of your right hand. Cup your hands together of your nose and mouth and inhale deeply.
Be careful not to touch your eyes until you have thoroughly washed your hands with soap and water.
You can also add several drops of an essential oil to a bowl of hot water, and inhale the steaming vapors
rising from the bowl. (You can intensify the effects by putting a towel of your head and the bowl before
inhaling, trapping the vapors inside). If you would rather a more indirect method of inhalation, you can
rub 2 or more drops of oil on to your chest, neck, wrists or under your nose and ears. This allows you to
breathe the vapors all day long.
Essential Oils can be used all around your home as well. Try adding a few drops of oil like peppermint,
lemon, cove or cinnamon to the post-filter side of your water purifier. This will enhance the purification
process. Application of an Essential Oil to your liquid dish soap accomplishes a dual purpose; if you
add an oil such as lavender, melaleuca, fir, pine, lemon or orange, it will enhance the smell of your dish
soap while increasing the antiseptic action of your every day household dish soap. Doing a little bit of
remodeling or painting? Add 1 teaspoon of your favorite essential oil to one gallon of paint. Mix well
and the oil will counteract the unpleasant chemical smell of the paint. Because Essential Oils are not
fatty, they will not leave oil spots on your walls.
From personal healing and enhanced well being, to common chores around the house including
painting, laundry and cleaning your surfaces, walls and carpets, a few drops of your favorite essential
oil can go a long way in making your home a healthier place to live. For more information about
how to best use Essential Oils in your home, contact Your Life Wisdom at 800.336.6308 or visit

EDR – Basic Guidelines for Safe Use of Essential Oils

It is foolish to dive headlong into a pond when you don’t know the depth of the water. The same is
true when using Essential Oils. Although a list of do’s and don’ts can prove helpful, that list can never
replace common sense. Start gradually and patiently find what works best for you and your family
members.

Whether you work with Essential Oils for home use only, or you are running a successful home-based
business with Young Living Essential Oils, it is important to realize that by following a few specific
guidelines, you can extend the shelf life of your oils, and ensure better results through proper storage
and application of the oils. One basic fact to remember is that these therapeutic-grade Essentials
Oils should be treated like any other medication; each oil will perform better when used and applied
properly.

By storing your Essentials Oils properly, you can ensure the safety of those around you as well as
extending the shelf life of your oils. Like any other health remedy or medication, it is important to keep
your Essential Oils in a cool dry place, away from light, and away from animals and small children; make
sure they are closed tightly. Although these oils are traditionally used to promote physical, mental
and even emotional healing, they may cause adverse reactions when not used properly or when over-
used. Always keep a bottle of pure vegetable oil close by; you may even want to add a small bottle as

a permanent part of your Essential Oils storage. Vegetable oil can dilute Essential Oils if the oil causes
discomfort or skin irritation.

There are also a few key things to remember when using your oils. Essential Oils rich in menthol (such
as peppermint) should not be used on the throat or neck of children less than 18 months old. Angelica,
bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, orange, tangerine and other citrus oils are photosensitive and may cause a
rash or dark pigmentation o skin exposed to direct sunlight or UV rays within 1-2 days after application.
Make sure the area is well covered for a few days after use. No matter what oil you’re using, keep it
away from your eyes and never use them inside the ears. Be careful not to handle contact lenses or rub
your eyes with Essential Oils on your hands. Even in minute amounts, many essential oils may damage
contacts and will irritate eyes. As with every other therapeutic product, pregnant women should consult
a health care professional when starting any type of health program and that includes those involving
Essential Oils. Pregnant women should avoid sage, fennel and hyssop.

No matter what oil you are using or what malady you are hoping to heal, it is important to understand
the different properties of each of the Essential Oils. In addition to knowing the main use of each
oil, it is also good to understand which oils can counteract the effects of an application gone awry.
For more information on all of your Essential Oils, contact Your Life Wisdom at 800.366.6308 or visit
www.ylwisdom.com and ask for the Essential Oil Desk Reference.

EDR – Adulterated Oils and their Dangers

There are many generic brands available on the market today; from food and clothing to personal
beauty and health care products. Many of these generic products are just as effective as the real
thing, so why bother with purchasing a higher quality product? When it comes to Essential Oils, the
difference between highly tested and proven therapeutic grade oils and a generic version can mean a
huge difference in your results.

A woman who considered herself to be fairly educated in matters of essential oils, once burned herself
with scalding hot water while cooking. Knowing that lavender was a great way to heal and quickly
diminish the pain of a burn, she quickly grabbed the bottle of lavender she kept in her home and applied
it directly to the skin. The results were not as she had hoped; rather than help with the burning, the
lavender oil seemed to actually intensify the burn and the pain. After such a bad experience, she
was thoroughly disappointed, angry, and convinced that lavender oil was useless as a burn and pain
treatment.

What she later found out is that her “lavender” was not truly Lavender Oil, but rather a severely diluted
form, common in the United States, called Lavandin. It is a hybrid lavender that is chemically very
different from pure Lavandula angustifolia (what we would categorize as therapeutic-grade Lavender
oil.) Lavandin contains high levels of camphor (up to 12-18%) and can, itself, burn the skin. By applying
adulterated oil to her skin, she had in fact, worsened the burn and extended the healing time. In
contrast, true Lavender Oil contains virtually NO camphor and has burn-healing agents not found in
lavandin.

Frankincense is another example of commonly adulterated oil. The frankincense resin that is sold
in Somalia costs between $30,000 and $35,000 per ton. A great deal of time – 12 hours or more –
is required to properly steam-distill this essential oil from the resin, making the oil fairly expensive.
Frankincense oil that sells for $25 per ounce or less is cheaply distilled with gum resins, alcohol, or other
solvents, leaving the essential oil laden with harmful chemicals. Sadly, these low-end oils tend to cause
rashes, burns, and other irritations and leave people disillusioned with the powerful healing potential of
Essential Oils.

Imagine for a moment, the first human to realize that a plant could support the healing processes of
the human body. Perhaps it began when a man or woman placed a plant leave or a part of the root
on a wound and it felt better, or healed more quickly. Or perhaps when a man wasn’t feeling well, he
ate a certain plant and he felt better. This information would have been passed down through the
generations through stories, and when writing technology was developed, these stories began to be
recorded and became more formalized.

For example, thousands of years ago, Essential Oils were used by Egyptians for embalming the dead
and supporting health. The hieroglyphics depict the combination of plant oils and describe hundreds
of recipes for different blends. In the Temple of Isis, the hieroglyphics depict a process called “the
cleansing of the flesh and blood of evil deities”. This was a process of emotional cleansing, using
Essential Oils which took about three days. Essential Oils are also referenced hundreds of times in the
Bible, telling us that these natural remedies have been used longer than we may have originally thought.
When Moses was told to smear lamb’s blood on the doors of the Israelites, he did so with the branches
and leaves of a plant we now know to have great anti-septic and anti-infectious properties. This may
have kept the homes in these neighborhoods from getting the plague.
